Who we are

PerlArte: La Perla's artist collective is mentored by Old San Juan Heritage Foundation, (a 501c3 non-profit organization) that promotes social equality by providing citizens capacitation and resources to promote a sustainable Touristic and Cultural Activities. After hurricane Maria, OSJHF hosted a community kitchen to feed over 400 citizens daily for over three weeks. The space owned by the organization (5,000sq.ft) was used to help La Perla citizens recover from the devastation. Since then our presence grew stronger to the point of becoming a community center. The artists that gathered in our place soon started the project of a collaborative effort. Thus, "PerlArte" was born.
We currently host several programs for the Community and its visitors such as:
Art Workshops (painting, mosaic, kite making and decoupage)
We recently received a Grant by Fundacion Flamboyan para las Artes. This Grant provides a cultural workshop to teach local residents how to build "Bomba" drums and also how to dance this folkloric dance.

We believe that education is key to prepare a community and develop future leaders. Thru the arts we have been able to bring together La Perla's community.
